Tell Me Your Word for 2021!

Have you ever picked a “theme” word for the year? It is quite a common practice among my friends and in my network. I first started this exercise in 2019 with the word ALIGN. For 2020 the word that spoke to me was READY… Both of these words have kept me inspired as I’ve moved forward in life and in business, so I want to keep this Word of the Year tradition alive! 🙂

Wondering how to choose your word of the year?

First, list some words you feel an emotional connection to. Pick a few that fit where you are now in your life – mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, and/or professionally. Then narrow them down to one that reflects what you think you’ll need to get where you want to be in the next year. I’ve found that when I’ve arrived at the best choice, I know it in my gut.

At the end of 2018 I was stressed, overwhelmed, and just plain tired. I recognized that I was in need of a life adjustment and landed on ALIGN for the next year to keep me inspired and taking steps toward my priorities. This choice was profound, and not only kept my priorities straight, but actually allowed me to honor my value, values, and resources in all of my decision-making.

I started out 2020 having selected a different word for the year (I actually don’t remember what it was), and realized only days into January that I needed a new word – something extra-special to boost my confidence for taking more risks. It didn’t take long before the word READY came to mind… And when it did, I knew it was exactly what I needed to motivate myself to step out and speak up more with faith and courage.

It turned out to be an even better choice than I expected for 2020 as a whole, and for my personal growth as well. Despite the struggles and challenges we all faced this year, just knowing in the back of my mind that my word for 2020 was READY helped me to cope, remain positive, and stay focused – no matter what happened. To me, that’s the biggest advantage of having a theme word.

I noticed a progression in my 2019 and 2020 choices that helped guide me to my decision for 2021’s word. The first involved initiating action focused on taking care of me. The second required me to position myself to boldly take action or respond to the actions of others. Now I am ALIGNED and READY for a very active word – one that inspires me and has lots of possibilities for fun – both for me and for others.

I’m excited to announce that my word for 2021 will be CREATE

I picked CREATE because personally I am creating the best version of myself this year, but also because I’m working on a very special project that I am more excited about than any other program I’ve ever done or been a part of so far! In 2021, I am committed to CREATE in all the ways possible, exploring many different avenues, including creating new offerings to help others in my business, creating recipes that fit my new autoimmune diet and lifestyle, creating fun experiences for my family, friends, and clients, and creating new content through writing and speaking.

I invite you to join me in choosing a theme word for 2021 for yourself if you haven’t done so already. There are no wrong answers, and guess what!? You can always change your mind like I did, at any point in the year, if you outgrow the one you pick or another word becomes a better fit. You are in charge here – you get to CREATE whatever experience you want to happen through your theme word.

What are some possible power words for you? Can you see the value in this exercise?

  1. Your article was thought provoking! It inspired thoughts of words relevant to my life. My most prominent word for 2021 will be #Perseverance, for it will take perseverance to navigate the unforeseen.

  2. Zoom!

With my business offerings and my ministry that I’ve worked hard to perfect. Not really the virtual video system, but that will play a role!

Helen – let’s connect on some ways we can refer each other in 2021? I am super impressed with all your hard work and focus you’ve put into your practice.

    Happy Holidays,

  3. The first word that popped into my head as I was reading this was OWN. And since this is no doubt my gut message, it is probably the right word for me at this time, though I have time to reflect on it before 2021 arrives. There is a reason for this choice, too, which I will explain later.
